Borderlands Series Fix Guide
The Borderlands series spans from 2009 to the present, which means it spans every era of PC gaming jank. The older the game, the more this page matters. Saves live under Documents\My Games\Borderlands*, so back them up before touching anything.
Borderlands 1: original (2009) vs GOTY Enhanced (2019)
Section titled “Borderlands 1: original (2009) vs GOTY Enhanced (2019)”The single best “patch” for the original Borderlands is one Gearbox shipped as a separate product: Borderlands GOTY Enhanced (2019), a free upgrade for owners of the original on Steam at release. It is the fix guide for BL1: modern OS compatibility, native controller support, quality-of-life from later games, and working multiplayer. The original’s online multiplayer was built on GameSpy, whose 2014 shutdown broke it until a patch bolted on a replacement.
- Own both? Play Enhanced. The original remains interesting only for its softer art grading and speedrun history.
- Playing the 2009 original anyway? Expect to edit
WillowEngine.ini(in the save folder area) for FOV and resolution quirks. That’s the era’s standard medicine, well documented by the game’s PCGamingWiki page. Verify files after any crash spree; the old build is sensitive to corrupt caches.
Borderlands 2: the PhysX problem
Section titled “Borderlands 2: the PhysX problem”BL2’s most famous modern-hardware issue: the game’s optional NVIDIA PhysX effects, set to Medium or High, cause stutter and crashes on modern systems, including modern NVIDIA cards, because the game’s PhysX libraries predate them by a decade.
Fix: set PhysX to Low in the visual options. That’s it. It’s the first thing to try for any BL2 instability, and the difference is dramatic. (The related liquid/cloth effects were always cosmetic; you lose almost nothing.)
Also common: launch crashes from corrupted config. Delete Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\Config and let the game rebuild it (your saves are separate and safe).
Borderlands 3 and beyond
Section titled “Borderlands 3 and beyond”- BL3’s DX12 mode starts slowly the first time (shader building). The multi-minute first launch is normal, not a hang. If instability persists on DX12, DX11 remains the stable fallback on older setups.
- Hotfixes are delivered at the main menu in BL3 and later. Start the game and wait at the menu for the “hotfixes applied” indicator before judging whether a bug you read about is fixed for you.
- Crashes after a series of GPU driver updates: verify files, then clear the game’s shader cache (the launch option or deleting the cache folder both work) so it rebuilds against the new driver.
Multiplayer notes across the series
Section titled “Multiplayer notes across the series”All modern entries and Enhanced use current matchmaking (Steam/Epic/SHiFT). If co-op connection fails on any entry: both players on the same store version and same patch first (cross-version co-op has never been a thing in this series), then the usual NAT/firewall suspects.
Quick reference
Section titled “Quick reference”| Game & symptom | First move |
|---|---|
| BL1 (2009) multiplayer/launch trouble | Play GOTY Enhanced instead |
| BL2 stutter or crash | PhysX to Low |
| BL2 crash at launch | Rebuild the Config folder |
| BL3 “hangs” on first DX12 launch | It’s building shaders; wait it out |
