Indiana Jones and the Great Circle problems on PC usually start with one of three things: unsupported graphics hardware, the wrong type of storage, or settings that use more video memory than the graphics card has.

Check those limits before reinstalling anything. If the computer meets them, work through the driver, file repair, and graphics steps below in order.

Start with hardware, then files, then settings

1. Confirm that the graphics card supports hardware ray tracing. The game will not run on a card that lacks this feature.
2. Confirm that the game is installed on an SSD. An HDD is below the official storage requirement.
3. Update the graphics driver and select the dedicated GPU. This matters most on laptops and computers with more than one GPU.
4. Repair the game files. Do this before changing Windows or reinstalling the game.
5. Return graphics settings to automatic or lower the texture pool. Test the game before turning advanced features back on.

If the first two checks fail, software tweaks will not solve the underlying problem.

Check the hardware ray tracing requirement

The game’s lighting system requires a GPU with hardware ray tracing. Bethesda’s official PC requirements list these minimum graphics cards:

• NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER with 8 GB of VRAM
• AMD Radeon RX 6600 with 8 GB of VRAM
• Intel Arc A580 with 8 GB of VRAM

The minimum specification also calls for 16 GB of system memory and 126 GB of SSD space, plus more space for downloadable content. A GTX card or another GPU without hardware ray tracing does not meet the requirement, even if it runs older games well.

Do not spend hours changing launch options if the GPU is below this floor. The practical fix is supported hardware.

Fix crashes before the main menu

Bethesda’s PC crash instructions put the system requirements and SSD check first. If both pass, use this order:

1. Install the newest stable driver for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU.
2. On a laptop, make sure TheGreatCircle.exe uses the dedicated GPU instead of integrated graphics.
3. Close recording tools, monitoring tools, and other overlays for one test launch.
4. Return CPU and GPU overclocks to their standard settings.
5. Verify or repair the game files.
6. Remove mods and test an unchanged installation.

For Steam, verification is under Properties > Installed Files. For the Xbox app, use the game’s Manage > Files > Verify and Repair controls.

Reduce stutter, freezes, and VRAM crashes

Start with the automatic graphics preset. Play long enough to enter a busy area, then raise one setting at a time.

Lower the texture pool first if the game freezes, hitches heavily, or closes after entering a new area. The minimum GPUs have 8 GB of VRAM, while Bethesda’s recommended cards have 12 GB. A setting that looks smooth in a quiet room can still run out of video memory later.

Keep full path tracing off while diagnosing normal performance. It is an optional high-end mode, not part of the standard ray-traced lighting requirement. Bethesda publishes separate path tracing requirements for supported hardware.

Bethesda’s performance checklist also recommends closing background apps, disabling Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar, using the correct GPU, and returning settings to the automatically detected values.

Repair a crash that started after an update

An update can leave a damaged file, expose an old driver problem, or make a mod incompatible. Use this sequence:

1. Restart the launcher and let every pending update finish.
2. Repair the game files once.
3. Update the GPU driver if the current driver predates the game update.
4. Disable mods and overlays.
5. Load an earlier save only after the game reaches the menu reliably.

If repair repeatedly finds damaged files, check free space, antivirus quarantine history, and drive health. Reinstall only after repair finishes cleanly but the unchanged game still crashes.

When reinstalling is worth the time

Reinstall when the computer meets the requirements, drivers are current, repair completes, all mods are removed, and the game still fails with automatic settings. Install it back onto an SSD and test before restoring mods or custom settings.
