Fallout 4 Fix Guide

Fallout 4 (2015) runs on modern Windows without heroics, but it carries a decade of known quirks, and since the April 2024 next-gen update, one big version decision. Back up your saves first (Documents\My Games\Fallout4): see Backups and File Verification.

First decision: which version are you playing?

Section titled “First decision: which version are you playing?”

The 2024 next-gen update split the game into two eras (full background in our analysis):

  • Playing unmodded, or lightly modded? Stay current. The updated game has ultrawide support and real fixes, and major mods have long since caught up. Just keep mods updated alongside the game.
  • Following a curated mod list? Use exactly the game version the list specifies. Many still pin the pre-update build; the list’s own instructions will name a downgrade tool. Use theirs. Downgraders fetch old files through Steam’s own content system, and the community-standard tools are well-maintained.

Either way: right-click the game in Steam, then Properties, Updates, “Only update this game when I launch it”, and launch through your mod manager or F4SE so Steam stops surprise-updating you.

Weapon Debris crash (NVIDIA RTX cards). The single most famous Fallout 4 crash: the Weapon Debris graphics setting uses an old NVIDIA physics library that crash-loops on RTX-era GPUs. Fix: set Weapon Debris to Off in the launcher’s graphics options. It costs nothing visually worth having; modded setups can use a community patch that fixes the effect properly.

Random crashes in long modded sessions. Install the community crash-logger/stability mod for your game version (the Buffout 4 family). It both prevents a class of engine crashes and names culprits in its logs when crashes happen anyway.

Crash or physics chaos above 60 fps. The engine ties physics to framerate. Vanilla: leave V-Sync on and don’t force the frame rate higher in your GPU control panel. Modded: the community’s high-FPS physics fix decouples it properly. Symptoms of getting this wrong include broken lockpicking, stuck terminals, and objects launching themselves.

Stutter and hitching in the downtown Boston area is engine-deep and never fully fixed. Mods that reduce draw calls help; no ini “one weird trick” does.

Symptom First move
Crash when shooting near debris (RTX GPU) Weapon Debris off
Won’t launch after a game update (modded) Update F4SE + mods, or hold version (details)
Terminals/lockpicking broken Cap to 60 fps / fix physics-framerate coupling
Corrupt-feeling install Verify files (removes loose mod files, so export your list first)
